THE EMPEROR Mythological reference: Zeus

Divinatory meaning: A need to make something solid, to concretise an idea, to build something with a firm structure.

The Emperor, portrayed as Zeus, was ruler of Olympus, the high dwelling place of the gods. He reflects the essence of masculine energy, the driving impulse to create, impart form and structure. His energy is forceful, dynamic and life-giving, unlike the Empress whose femininity is much more gentle, receptive and preserving. The Empress provides the fertile soil, the Emperor the divine life- giving seed. She is Mother and he is Father. The Emperor symbolises the aspect in man which pushes him to build material constructions and make his creations solid. He guides the ambition which drives us to strive and to succeed. In families, it is often the father who lays down the ideals, morals and aspirations of the family.

As you set out to explore the image of the Emperor in more depth and embark or he colouring exercise, consider your own relationship with father. How do you feel about him? Was he a lenient, helpful, informative, encouraging fgure, or was he harsh, _ authoritarian and rigid? As with the Empress-mother exercise, discovering deep felings about your personal relationship with father may be comfortable or not, depending, as always, upon your personal experience. But no matter how loving or oppressive your relationship was, there comes a time when you must become your own person, become a capable individual. Separation from mother and father is, as we have seen, a crucial stage of development. Yet the myth of Zeus and Cronus, like that of Demeter and Persephone, shows that separation is not easy. Persephone reaches a compromise with partial separation but Zeus was obliged to dispose of his father completely, in order to fee himself from the rigid dictates of that dominating figure. This took him no less than ten years to accomplish. Myth thus tells us that such family conflicts are archetypal and each of us needs to undergo similar struggles in whichever way one's life pattern dictates. Fortunately separation from father does not usually involve literally disposing of him although it can feel just as traumatic.

Use the colouring exercise to explore the various faces of the father, Zeus,

allowing your personal experience to guide you. Be aware of your wider associations too, because these connect your general attitude to authority with your relationship with father. Choose a key colour which sums the card up for you and as always keep a note of all the feelings which working on the image evokes.

When you come to do your guided fantasy exercise imagine yourself to be on the top of the icy mountain peaks. It is cold on the mountain top and the colours of blues and purples are cold too. The Emperor is an impressive figure seated on his throne of power and majesty. Approach him and engage in conversation What strikes you most about the feelings evoked by your meeting with the Emperor? Record your fantasy exercise as soon as it is completed.

与进行皇后牌时做的训练一样，取决于个人经历，你也许会发现与父亲相关的深刻印象可能会打开你久远的回忆，里面可能既有遗忘的感动又有封尘的伤痛。
