卡巴拉，字面的意思是“接收”或“接受”，是與拉比猶太教的神秘觀點相關的一種訓練課程。這是一套隱秘的教材，用來解釋永恆而神秘的造物主與短暫而有限的宇宙之間的關係。卡巴拉是一種神秘的人類智慧，這種智慧包含于“耶齊拉（創造）”與“索哈爾（光明）”這兩部書中，能夠幫助人們回歸上帝。但是長期以來，卡巴拉智慧一直為傳奇、神話以及曲解所籠罩，甚至已被隱藏了4500年，因此卡巴拉被稱為“被隱藏的智慧”。
正是由於古往今來的卡巴拉學者在代代相傳中只會將這種智慧教授給極少數的、值得的、高度發展的而同時有著旁人所沒有的某些神秘特點的人，只有擁有這樣的特點，才能正確地理解並使用卡巴拉智慧。這也是卡巴拉學者將卡巴拉智慧隱瞞起來的原因之一。原因之二則在於所有卡巴拉書籍中的詞彙均“看上去”指某物或人，但實際上卻沒有任何一個提到物質世界的單詞。這種智慧如果沒有師承是無法自行讀懂真正卡巴拉書籍，無論你多麼聰穎，最終除卻想像的產物而將一無所獲。因此，卡巴拉智慧是依靠希伯來語在老師與學生之間秘密地口頭傳承下來的。同時，一個人若要領悟卡巴拉所揭示的“人生”體系的目的和本質，必須要有強烈的詢問人生目標的願望，否則將得不到任何答案。
雖說卡巴拉被視為猶太神秘教派，但實際上它並不屬於任何宗教。著名卡巴拉學者萊特曼博士曾說過：“一方面，卡巴拉是科學，它通過圖形、公式、圖紙和系統的方法來描述；另一方面，卡巴拉與宗教沒有任何關係。宗教兩千年前才出現，而卡巴拉早在4500年前就出現在古巴比倫，那時沒有民族分別，亦無真正的宗教。宗教包含了各種象徵、歷史現象、行為、習慣和傳統，而卡巴拉與這些沒有任何關係。卡巴拉是關於自然的科學，與宗教背道而馳。卡巴拉是要去達到、去發現而不是去信奉的科學。”
傳說上帝在創世時創造了兩種知識，一種是為普通大眾所能習得的平庸知識，另一種則是專為那些極富智慧的人而創造的、最接近上帝的知識，卡巴拉無疑屬於後者。卡巴拉運用數字與幾何圖形傳達著智慧的密碼，而它的思想象徵便“生命之樹”。
生命之樹包含著十個描繪“Sephiroth（源體）”的圓圈，意味著“天體”、“數字”、“散發”，十個圓圈代表著上帝的十個方面。自生命之樹的頂端向下的過程，是上帝創世的過程，上帝就如同燦爛的光輝，象徵星體的圓球如同鏡子，光芒從第一面鏡子反射到第二面鏡子，接著又反射到第三面、第四面……在持續的反射中，光芒逐漸暗淡，直至完全消失在無限的世界中；自生命之樹的底端向上的過程，則是人的靈魂回歸神界的過程，而掌握其中的奧秘之時，是靈魂脫離物質世界、回歸純粹的必由之路。因此在卡巴拉修行冥想的旅途中，人類要通過22個徑（Pass）到達每一個圓，最終越過頂端那一枚象徵著“有創造的泉源、純粹存在、生命力的泉源”的Sephiroth“Kether” (Crown;王冠)，最終遇見三層能量環:虛空（Ain）、無限（Ain-Soph）、無數的光（Ain-Soph Aur）……
光辉之书》是一本对《圣经旧约》（Tora）的注释集，其目的是引导那些已经达到精神世界的人们， 回到他们灵魂的源头。 |
