死亡被认为是非常神秘的。江湖郎中、哲学家、医生和诗人都曾尝试对其作出解释，但死亡仍然是未知的，也是不可知的——它似乎只是每个人不可避免的归宿。只有能有意识地跨界于生死之间的神秘主义者，才能解释如何超越生与死，并为我们呈献方法，作为实现超越的第一步。
萨古鲁：你需要明白这一点：你能体验到的一切都是生命。你所谓的死亡也是生命。因此，死亡可以选择吗？当然可以选择。你所说的死亡只是生命的最后一刻。你超越物质身局限的那一刻，也就是你生命的最后时刻，一生只会发生一次。你生命中几乎所有事情都可能重复发生多次。但是，死亡在你一生中只发生一次，并且，这是你经历的最后一件事情。我希望你们把死亡理解为生命，而不是别的。这是你生命中最后的行为。所以重要的是，你要选择让它优雅而美好地发生。如果你害怕死亡，如果你无视生命之道，并对死亡形成抗拒，自然，你就会错失那可能性。
灵性道路上的人会选择死亡的时间、日期和地点。瑜伽士总想提前知道他们死亡的时间和日期。他会将它设定好。死前很多年，他会说，“在这一天，这个时间，我会离开。”他就会这么做，因为，他的内在已经产生了必要的觉知，能够有意识地离去。有意识地离开这个身体，但却不对这个身体造成伤害，就像你脱下衣服之后走开一样，你蜕去你的躯体，然后离开。如果你能做到这一点，那么，这就是你生命的终极可能。如果你的觉知已经到达了这样一个程度，以至于你知道你的存在核心与你所累积的这个物质身的连接点在哪里，那么，你就能够在任何合适的时机，让自己解开这个牵绊。
这是自杀吗？这绝对不是自杀。人们会因为沮丧、愤怒、恐惧或无法承受痛苦而自杀。这既不是自杀，也不是安乐死。这是一种觉知，你清楚地知道什么时候是你这一世轮回的终点，所以你就走出这个轮回。这也不是死亡。这被称作Samadhi（三摩地），在这个状态中，一个人内在已经具备了足够的觉知，能够将他自己与他所积累的躯壳分别开来。在这种觉知中，一个人可以选择离开。如果你还没达到这种觉知层次，通过做一些事，至少你可以把这个最后的时刻变得非常优雅、愉悦、快乐和喜悦。
如果你想要行使这个选择，就需要进行一定量的准备工作。你不能一辈子都浪费生命，然后想在最后时刻利用死亡。如果你一生都保持一定层次的觉知，跨越的那一瞬间就能够有觉知地发生。你的一生都过得毫无觉知，而你却想让那个瞬间变得有觉知，这种事是不会发生的。
今晚，只要像这样练习：跨越的最后一个瞬间——我称之为跨越，是因为，这是你从清醒跨向沉睡的最后瞬间——保持你的觉知，试试看。这会给你的生命带来非凡的转变。每天都这么去做。带着全然的决心坚持这么做。你会看到过不了几天，你可以做到在跨向沉睡的最后瞬间保持觉知。突然，你生命的一切，你生命的根本品质将会改变，仅仅因为做了这么一件简单的事情。如果你能够在觉知中从清醒转入沉睡，你从生命跨向死亡的最后一瞬间，就会发生得非常优雅。当然，也有其他的方法。
在印度，人们传统上不会选择在他们挚爱的人身边离开，因为，如果你离开的时候有家人围绕，将会产生很多情感。你自然就会对生命恋恋不舍。你就无法让死亡优雅地发生。因此，人们会远行到他们认为灵性能量活跃的地方，在那些地方抛开他们的躯体。时至今日，还是有人这么做。这在西方可能看起来不可思议，因为，他们会希望在家人的安慰中死去。这不是明智的做法。真正明智的做法是选择在一个能量活跃的、有益的灵性空间，尽可能优雅地离开。如果你已经优雅地过完了一生，那么，优雅的离开也是极为重要的。
