The wind was a torrent of darkness upon thegusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed uponcloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight loopingthe purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding--
Riding--riding--
The highwayman came riding, up to the oldinn door.
He'd a French cocked hat on his forehead,and a bunch of lace at his chin;
He'd a coat of the claret velvet, andbreeches of fine doe-skin. 穿着紫红的天鹅绒外衣,和褐色的鹿皮长裤;
They fitted with never a wrinkle; his bootswere up to his thigh!
And he rode with a jeweled twinkle--
His rapier hilt a-twinkle--
His pistol butts a-twinkle, under thejeweled sky.
Over the cobbles he clattered and clashedin the dark inn-yard,
He tapped with his whip on the shutters,but all was locked and barred, 他扬鞭轻叩那小窗,但一切都已紧闭深锁;
He whistled a tune to the window, and whoshould be waiting there
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter--
Bess, the landlord's daughter--
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her longblack hair.
Dark in the dark old inn-yard astable-wicket creaked
Where Tim, the ostler listened--his facewas white and peaked-- 那马夫铁姆正在偷听;他的脸是瘦削而又苍白;
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hairlike mouldy hay,
But he loved the landlord's daughter--
The landlord's black-eyed daughter; 那店主的红唇的女儿;
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard therobber say:
"One kiss, my bonny sweetheart; I'mafter a prize tonight, 「亲一亲,我的乖乖,我今夜要去劫一宗肥财,
But I shall be back with the yellow goldbefore the morning light. 但是在天亮之前,我就回来,带回来黄金块块;
Yet if they press me sharply, and harry methrough the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,
Watch for me by moonlight,
I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hellshould bar the way."
He stood upright in the stirrups; he scarcecould reach her hand,
But she loosened her hair in the casement!His face burnt like a brand
As the sweet black waves of perfume cametumbling o'er his breast, 仰望那芬芳的乌发,像瀑布泻落在他的胸上;
Then he kissed its waves in the moonlight
(O sweet black waves in the moonlight!),
And he tugged at his reins in the moonlight,and galloped away to the west.
He did not come in the dawning; he did notcome at noon. 破晓时不见他回来;到中午不见他回来;
And out of the tawny sunset, before therise of the moon,
When the road was a gypsy's ribbon over thepurple moor,
The redcoat troops came marching--
Marching--marching--
King George's men came marching, up to theold inn-door.
They said no word to the landlord; theydrank his ale instead,
But they gagged his daughter and bound herto the foot of her narrow bed. 他们塞住他女儿的嘴巴,绑她在小床的脚上;
Two of them knelt at her casement, withmuskets by their side;
There was Death at every window, 死神守住了每一扇窗口;
And Hell at one dark window, 地狱把昏暗的一扇把守;
For Bess could see, through her casement,the road that he would ride.
They had bound her up at attention, withmany a sniggering jest! 他们把贝丝僵直地捆绑,一面又格格地把她嘲弄;
They had tied a rifle beside her, with thebarrel beneath her breast!
"Now keep good watch!" and theykissed her. She heard the dead man say, 「
"Look for me by moonlight, 「那就在月光下等我回来;
Watch for me by moonlight, 在月光下望我回来;
I'll come to thee by moonlight, though Hellshould bar the way."
She twisted her hands behind her, but allthe knots held good!
She writhed her hands till her fingers werewet with sweat or blood!
They stretched and strained in thedarkness, and the hours crawled by like years,
Till, on the stroke of midnight,
Cold on the stroke of midnight,
The tip of one finger touched it! Thetrigger at least was hers!
The tip of one finger touched it, shestrove no more for the rest;
Up, she stood up at attention, with thebarrel beneath her breast.
She would not risk their hearing, she wouldnot strive again, 她不想再冒险,怕他们听见;她不再用力扭挣;
For the road lay bare in the moonlight, 因为大路坦露在月光下;
Blank and bare in the moonlight, 荒寂地坦露在月光下;
And the blood in her veins, in themoonlight, throbbed to her love's refrain.
Tlot tlot, tlot tlot! Had they heard it?The horse-hooves, ringing clear; 特啦特啦,特啦特啦!他们听见了吗?那蹄声清越地飞扬;
Tlot tlot, tlot tlot, in the distance! Werethey deaf that they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight, over the browof the hill,
The highwayman came riding--
Riding--riding--
The redcoats looked to their priming! Shestood up straight and still.
Tlot tlot, in the frosty silence! Tlottlot, in the echoing night!
Nearer he came and nearer! Her face waslike a light!
Her eyes grew wide for a moment, she drewone last deep breath,
Then her finger moved in the moonlight--
Her musket shattered the moonlight--
Shattered her breast in the moonlight andwarned him--with her death.
He turned, he spurred to the West; he didnot know who stood
Bowed, with her head o'er the casement, drenchedin her own red blood!
Not till the dawn did he hear it, and hisface grew grey to hear
How Bess, the landlord's daughter,
The landlord's black-eyed daughter,
Had watched for her love in the moonlight,and died in the darkness there.
Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking acurse to the sky,
With the white road smoking behind him andhis rapier brandished high!
Blood-red were his spurs in the goldennoon, wine-red was his velvet coat
When they shot him down in the highway,
Down like a dog in the highway,
And he lay in his blood in the highway,with the bunch of lace at his throat.
And still on a winter's night, they say,when the wind is in the trees,
When the moon is a ghostly galleon tossedupon cloudy seas,
When the road is a gypsy's ribbon loopingthe purple moor,
The highwayman comes riding--
Riding--riding--
The highwayman comes riding, up to the oldinn-door.
Over the cobbles he clatters and clangs inthe dark inn-yard, 圆石上答答又各各,他在阴暗的小院骑过;
He taps with his whip on the shutters, butall is locked and barred, 他扬鞭轻叩那小窗,但一切都已紧闭深锁;
He whistles a tune to the window, and whoshould be waiting there
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter--
Bess, the landlord's daughter--
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her longblack hair.
