Mythological reference: The judgement of Paris
Divinatory meaning: A love affair with a trial or choice attached.
THE LOMERS
The image of the Lovers reflects Paris, who was called upon by Zeus to judge a beauty contest between the three great goddesses, Hera, Athene and Aphrodite. It is worth noting the various choices Paris was offered: power and wealth by Hera, victory in battle by Athene, love and beauty by Aphrodite. While it may be understandable that Paris, as a young man, opted for love and beauty, it is also clear that he did not consider the options carefully nor did he give a thought for the consequences of his choice. When making choices in life we often tend to go for the option which has the most obvious advantages, not realising that there may be adverse consequences as well. Every choice has both advantages and disadvantages connected to it. Sometimes it is wise to consider not what has the greatest advantage but what has the least disadvantage.
The card of the Lovers follows from the Fool's discovery about the complexity of his parenthood. As you come to study the Lovers in more detail, bear in mind what the previous exercises concerning mother and father have revealed. Try to connect your own romantic choices with your experience of relationships within your family. The way you regard relationship will inevitably have been affected by the kind of relationship you had with your parents and they had with each other. The choices that were made in your family will obviously have bearing on the choice you make. The world of love and relationships which the Lovers represent requires particular kinds of choices to be made. Paris as a young man is more concerned with his physical desires than their consequences. So, too, the first relationships we form in adolescence tend to be based on the physical magnetism of the other partner, not on his or her deeper qualities of character. As we become more mature, however, other factors such as compatibility and positive qualities of character assume equal importance.
As you begin to colour in the image of the Lovers, allow yourself time to think
about your own attitudes to love. What is important to you in a relationship? How do you pick partners? On what do you base your choices- physical appearance, wealth and status, quality of character, friendship or passion? Select key colours for this card; colours which sum up both its bright and dark side.
When you start the visualisation exercise put yourself in Paris' shoes. Imagine you were faced with such a choice. How would you handle it? Imagine yourself standing on the mountainside with the delicate task of giving a precious prize to one of the three goddesses standing before you. Have several conversations if possible, one with each goddess, asking advice, and one with Paris asking his reasons for his choice. You might like to ask each one of them a specific question regarding a choice you have to make. As usual make a note of all that took place in your fantasy visit to the land of the gods.
